Summer 2018 can also be defined by its breakout stars, perhaps most notably Juice WRLD, a 19-year-old Chicago rapper whose track “Lucid Dreams” has been a consistent presence on Spotify’s global chart for the last two months. Our list of top summer streaming jams also includes dance tracks such as “One Kiss” by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa and “Solo” by Clean Bandit(featuring Demi Lovato)-both especially popular across Europe-as well as 5 Seconds of Summer’s pop-rock anthem “Youngblood.” Ariana Grande’s track “no tears left to cry” was a mainstay on our charts throughout the summer as the singer’s lead single off Sweetener, one of August’s most anticipated albums. (Kudos to the new mom for being behind two out of three of Summer’s biggest hits!). Maroon 5’s ballad “Girls Like You” (featuring Cardi B) is the second most-streamed song of the summer, with about 293 million streams, and Cardi B’s “I Like It” (featuring J Balvin and Bad Bunny) came in a close third with more than 289 million streams for the same time period. The track, from the artist’s smash double album Scorpion, streamed more than 393 million times between June 1 and August 20. The line not only set the stage for a viral dance challenge, but served as the standout lyric of 2018’s most streamed song of the summer – “In My Feelings” by Drake. Calvin Harris might have been at the top of his game in 2013, but he’ll really have to step things up if he wants it to stay that way. Harris seems to be operating on the idea that if something is successful then you should stick to it, but this isn’t a great idea in music. Summer offers us everything we’ve already heard before, and doesn’t try to disguise it. However, the instrumental breakdown doesn’t offer the same freshness if you hadn’t heard the lyrics, you would not be mistaken in thinking it could be any of the other numerous EDM tracks out there. This is the case with Summer, and whilst his vocals may not be the best, it’s nice to see this change of pace. One thing that sets Harris apart from others is that he occassionally sings himself, rather than always relying on collaborations with big names. The shortness of this set of lyrics for the entire song means that they don’t offer any sort of depth or complexity to the audience. There is actually only 10 lines of lyrics, which are repeated twice. Summer follows the generic EDM formula of chorus/instrumental/chorus/instrumental. With the mammoth success of 18 Months under his belt, can the first single from his upcoming fourth studio album reach the same success? Harris has shown that, whilst there may be more contenders in the DJ field now, he’s still at the top, with Forbes magazine listing him as the highest paid DJ of 2013. He holds the record for the most top ten hits from one studio album ( 18 Months) on the UK Singles Chart with nine hits, surpassing even the legendary Michael Jackson. Scottish DJ Calvin Harris first burst onto the music scene in 2007, and was one of the key figures in establishing the ‘electronic dance music’ (EDM) genre that is so dominant in mainstream music now.
